Finally, a new JMU football season is here.
The Dukes open their 2026 season Saturday at home against Liberty. Here’s what you need to know for the game.
How to watch
JMU’s season opener will air on ESPNU, and it’s honestly one of the better early afternoon matchups Saturday.
Kickoff time: Noon ET
TV: ESPNU.
Weather: Saturday’s forecast calls for a high in the low 80s, which is necessary reprieve after a scorching hot week in Virginia. This should be a decent temperature for an early September game. There’s a 25% chance of thunderstorms, down from well over 50% a few days ago. Fingers crossed, but it could be an ideal weather day.
Liberty overview
Record: 0-0, 4-8 last season
Coach: Jamey Chadwell, 25-13 record at Liberty, 123-70 career record as a head coach
Top players: RB Peyton Jones and DT Mike Jarvis.
Jones, a Duke transfer, has over 400 career rushing yards and should thrive in Chadwell’s offensive system. Liberty’s entire running back room is among the best in the Group of 6. Jarvis, who previously played at Wisconsin, has steadily improved over two seasons with Liberty. He’s poised for a strong season as a sixth-year player and could gain All-Conference honors.
Key to the game
Win up front.
JMU will have a new starting quarterback, two new receivers, and several new offensive linemen. The defense has an entirely new-look secondary, at least one new starting linebacker, and several new defensive linemen filling major roles. Liberty also has plenty of roster turnover, albeit less than the Dukes.
Oh, and JMU’s coaching staff is almost entirely new!
There is almost guaranteed to be clunkiness in Week 1, given the major changes. The best way to overcome an early lack of chemistry and cohesion? Bully ball.
Memphis, with a new-look roster, bullied UNLV in Week 0. The Tigers had six sacks and averaged 5.7 yards per carry in a 27-21 win. They had defensive lapses and offensive inconsistency, but they covered it up with elite play up front.
That’s the blueprint this weekend for the Dukes. Run the ball. Stop the run. Pressure the quarterback.

Score prediction
The Dukes may struggle early defensively as they adjust to Liberty’s unique scheme, but they should settle in over the course of the game. Offensively, JMU should be really exciting under new OC Cam Aiken. But the Dukes are also breaking in a new starting QB.
After a feeling-out process in the first half, JMU pulls away in the second.
